So you’re ready for something new. You’ve had it with sleeping amid the Lego’s your kids left on the floor, the piles of dirty laundry, the stack of bills on the nightstand, and, for whatever reason, the broken rotisserie that somehow ended up in the corner. You’re ready to declutter and claim your personal space back from the rest of the household!
Master bedrooms can often serve as the hub for many different activities in the household, and it’s easy for them to get buried in “stuff” that just doesn’t belong there. Just like most parents, the room is usually the last to get any attention in the house, but because of the “go go go” lifestyle that most families lead these days, it’s vital that adults have a quiet, relaxing space to go to at the end of the day.
So, our mission is to turn this cluttered, chaotic space into a relaxing haven for you and your partner or spouse. Having an organized bedroom will propel you forward during the day in ways you just can’t imagine! Here’s some quick tips to help get you started:
- Declutter- Having a million knick knacks on every surface just makes it harder to dust. We’re trying for a calm, serene atmosphere here! Cull most of the knick knacks and just leave a few that are really special. The others can go into storage and you can rotate them every few months for a new look. Same goes for your closet- if you haven’t worn or used it in over a year, chances are you won’t. Trash it or donate it, but get it out of there!
- Get rid of photographs- This one will probably draw gasps of horror from most parents, but your bedroom should be for you and your partner. NO ONE ELSE! Feng Shui states that art can be placed on the walls, but leave pictures of family members for common areas of the home.
- Look at your nightstands- If clutter seems to gravitate on the surface, look at the stand itself. It should have plenty of storage space, and if you’re a nighttime reader it will need at least one shelf for your books. If you can’t seem to keep this space clear you might need a nightstand that functions better for your needs. Try to keep the top free of everything except your lamp and clock to cut down on visual clutter.
- Rearrange- When was the last time you rearranged in here? Moving the furniture is a great way to reenergize the space and make the room seem new again. As you’re moving stuff around, make sure you’re cleaning as you go as well. Vacuum all those little dust bunnies out from under the bed!
- Lose the TV- Nothing is worse in Feng Shui than to have a TV in your bedroom. Most people watch 3 or more hours per day as it is, so why not spend the time before you go to bed doing something else, like reading or talking to your partner?
- Less is more- The less “stuff” you have in here, the more relaxing it’s going to be. Think soothing, cool tones for the walls, and just a few works of art. The bedroom should be a place of rest, and the more stuff in there to look at and worry about, the less relaxing it will be.
